    ZAMTEL rolling out fibre-optic backbone

    The Zambia Telecommunications Company Limited (ZAMTEL) has announced that it has started its plans of rolling out a metropolitan optical fibre network which will provide new broadband services to Capital Lusaka's corporate customers.

    A statement from the company said with fibre-optic backbone, ZAMTEL shall have the ability to deliver multimedia communications and content to a global constituency for Zambian goods and services.

    “This technology will make available information, content, services and connectivity on a global scale, while allowing for many different methods of user access,” says the statement posted on its website.

    The Zambian telecommunication giant says in order to remain competitive; it intends to continue playing a dominant role in the ICT industry by identifying and fully exploiting strategic opportunities that exist globally.

    “It is within this context that ZAMTEL has adopted a strategic ICT management perspective in order to exploit the techno-economic benefits of integrating into the global information economy,” the company says.

    Installation to customer premises has already started and it has services that include high-speed internet, high-speed point-to-point data services and point to multi-point data services as well as high-speed local area networks.
